The Slot Punch: The Little Tool That Could
By Catherine Williams of Safecard ID
In every office there seems to be that one little tool that carries a very heavy work load but often goes unnoticed. The Slot Punch is one of those tools. It is one of those tools that…what’s that; you don’t know what this tool is? Well then; let’s back it up a little. The Slot Punch is an essential tool for those companies that are producing identification cards in their own office. When the company or organization makes the decision to begin their own card printing process there are a few necessary tools they need to complete the operation and this tool is certainly one of them. First the company or organization chooses a card printer; perhaps a Datacard printer that will produce the smart cards they desire. Then they need the smaller tools that assist in completing the card production task at hand. The punch does exactly what it hints at; it punches slots in the identification cards when they are finished so that they can be attached to a card holder and then to the clothing. The standard hand held punch is very common and the one that has been around the block for a while. This size punch is better suited for the smaller operation and would probably work an employee to death if utilized in a large operation. There is also a stapler punch that offers a little more volume potential. In addition, there is a table punch that is wonderful for those companies that produce a high volume of identification cards. Of course with the advent of modern technology there are even electric punches that make that high volume card production go smooth and steady. Obviously you will pay more for the larger punches but that is expected. Furthermore, these punches can produce a variety of slots. The slots can be made in various diameters and dimensions. These tools are used to make smooth slots without damaging the plastic cards after production. Some offices may have more than one type of punch in case of an emergency. It is recommended however that each office purchase the punches they will actually need. It is not wise to over purchase and get a volume punch that is far more than what is needed. Of course the entire process begins around the Datacard printer that you purchase. As with the punch you don’t want to buy features that you will not need or ever utilize. You may need this printer that produces cards capable of holding immense data in the form of magnetic stripes or data chips. But then again you may only require a standard color photo ID machine that produces beautiful color cards in a matter of seconds. That is a decision that has to be carefully made when the company or organization is making the purchase decision. In the end it is the punch tool that places the finishing touches on the identification card. It is obviously the little tool that could.

Huh... I've certainly used a hole punch before, but I've never before heard of a slot punch. Cool... I just learned something!
