Selecting an ID card system

By Catherine Williams of Safecard ID

Common in today’s organizations and businesses, plastic card printers are printing in house employee identification cards. Plastic cards are used for other things as well in today’s business world. Identification, debit, access, discounts and numerous other uses makes the id card printer a valuable asset to the headquarters of a large corporation and even a small service business.

Choosing an ID card system is easy once you learn the common terms of the industry. There are basic terms that everyone interesting in card printing should know and then there are different upgrade options dealing with security and card longevity. These additional items to the basic system are determined by what you need, the type of organization that you are and how much of a security level is needed from the card and in the environment.

A complete ID card printer system contains an ID card printer, computer, card design software and digital camera. Supplies such as PVC cards, ribbons, and badge holders are an important part as well. Supply needs vary from business to business as each security process and security needs are unique by industry and organizational size.

You will know what printer features you desire if you organize before beginning your ID card printer system search. Basic IDs are simple and economical to come by. Optional features change the card printing results and also the cost of the printer system. Understanding the allocated budget for the system will help to pinpoint what options are available.

There are many quality ID card systems on the market. Some of prepackaged by the printer manufacturer and others are customer built by with consultation with an ID card system integrator. A variety of business needs can be met in quality printers made by Fargo, Evolis, Zebra and Datacard. Entry level printers print colorful identification badges.

These may contain company logos, photographs and custom information. Entry level printers may also print bar codes. The newest type of printing is the High definition printing printed with a reverse transfer printing method. Although more expensive, the printers offer a better quality output and also add on modules to expand the functionality of the card. Mag stripe encoding, smart card encoding, holograms and other security features that may be needed can be found on high definition printing models.

Once you know what your specific card requirements are, the printer choice will depend upon your preference in pricing, manufacturer or integrator warranties, availability of technical support and after purchase field upgradable options. With the correct printer selected and obtained, the installation of the system has never been easier. Plug and play features, complete instructions, integrator videos and other assistance are all available with most printer purchases. Even the most complex, secure printer can be easily installed with appropriate administrative computer rights.

After completing necessary security features in installation, the card printer system can be used by authorized users after simple instructions. Office workers that have security authorization can easily log into the system and begin card design and printing.
