Plastic Cards
By Catherine Williams of Safecard ID
There are multiple uses for plastic cards in today’s world. Employee IDs, loyalty cards, transit passes, gift cards and other card uses are all increasing the demand for having plastic card printer accessibility for businesses and organizations. The card printer allows plastic ID cards to be made in a snap. Forget the not so many years ago method of printing the card out on paper and then laminating the card. The work to the cut and paste makes a thirty second plastic card print seem like a breeze. Because the card information can now be stored in a database, it is easy to create replacements for lost cards. The cards, issued on site, can be duplicated quickly and efficiently. Cards are printed by a thermal transfer method or a dye sublimation method in common ID card printers of today. In both of these methods, the ink is heated by a printhead and is burnt into the plastic card. Professional model printers are often equipped with the high definition model of printing. This printing transfers the image to the back of a plastic film which is permanently attached to the plastic card. The results of this type of printing produce a higher quality image and allows over the edge printing. When reviewing printer purchase options, double check to make sure the user interface is able to work with your computer. Older printers have parallel ports, but the newer models have USB and or Ethernet ports for using on a stand alone or as a network printer. Card design software varies in complexity. Many software companies provide a trial version showing the basic features of the program. This is a good thing to try. Based on the complexity of the card needed and the system the program will be used on, the software chosen needs to complement the in house capabilities and desires. Cards printed on plastic provide a method of producing one card with text, graphics, photos, logos and car codes. Magnetic stripe and other encoding methods can be provided with many printers on the market making the multifunction capabilities of the printer a worthwhile investment. Cards printed on plastic often are displayed by a card holder while on the job or in their group. To display the cards, it is common to purchase a slot punch. These handy punches provide a professional hole in the badge without cracking the plastic. The card is then displayed by use of a badge attachment. Some companies let their employees choose from a number of different attachments. Other companies want a uniform look and require a specific badge attachment such as a badge reel or a customized lanyard. Purchasing a plastic card printer is a good investment for business owners who want to produce ID cards efficiently and who want to have full control of the design and of the implementation of their ID card program.
