Items in an ID Badge Printer System
By Catherine Williams of Safecard ID
The ID badge printer system has been approved for your business. The boss has put the research in your lap and it is important to make the best decisions for the success of your organization. By determining what the output of your badge printing requirements are, you can begin the process of finding the system that will provide the card requirements at a price you need. By reviewing the available options, you can provide for your organizations current and future ID card printing needs. Bundled, turn key systems are marketed by printer manufacturers that are perfect for a small company that is hoping for an easy way to obtain a complete system. Customized systems are typically put together for businesses and organizations with specialized needs. It is wise to understand the components of systems so that the purchase of your printer set up is smooth and that the cards produced meet the requirements you need. The Printer- The key component of the system is the card printer that accepts the software’s instructions and prints the ID cards There are many manufacturers who produce a range of quality card printers. Standard ID card printing is available with the lower priced printer models. These printers are small and reasonable in price. Many organizations determine that this entry level printer will meet all of their needs. While you don’t want to over purchase, you do want to ensure that your printer comes with all of the options that you need today and in the future. ID Badge printers with high level security printing output are available. These printers are sometimes costly, but the printer with security options may be a requirement for some situations. Software- Software is the most complex component in the printer package. Software versions have many features.. Basic software may not allow import and export functions and many versions do not even hold a database of the cards printed. Current and future needs of the organization will direct the version of software that will accommodate the initial printing of badges plus the future needs of badge changes and reporting requirements. Camera- Many identification cards display a picture of the person the card is issued to. There are variations in the picture quality based on the camera used and the techniques utilized by the photographer. From the local warehouse membership card to the driver’s license, the quality of picture vary based on the camera available for picture taking. A standard digital camera from your local camera shop or id card integrator may work perfect for your needs. Some web cameras will work for others. Cards and Consumables – The majority of ID cards are printed on standard 30 mil PVC cards. A more durable or a custom card may be needed for door access or for cards that are used in rough conditions. Always purchase print ribbons that are manufactured for your specific printer model. Various off brand or other manufacturer brand ribbons usually will not work or will not produce the quality output required. Badge holders are recommended if the cards will be worn. Many options are available to secure and display badges while on the job. It is also possible that a slot punch will be needed depending on the holder selected. Slot punches are handy tools that make a professional badge hole without cracking the plastic card.
