ID Badge System Startup: Choose Your Product Wisely
By Catherine Williams of Safecard ID
You have already made a profound decision when you decided to go with an ID Badge System in your organization. However, there are more essential decisions to be made. Now you have to choose what items you will need to get you started. You will want to choose these items wisely. There is no simple package that covers the needs of everyone. You have to determine what is right for you and your organization depending on your needs and requirements not to mention your budget. Let us examine some of the basic items that you will need to rollout your ID Badge System painlessly. Software – Choosing your software may just be one of the most difficult decisions you will have to make in this process. The options that are at your disposal are endless and can be mind- boggling. You have to narrow down the options to coincide with the needs of your organization. There is a fine line between under achieving and over achieving when it comes to software. You always want to keep this in mind. How big is your organization now and how much to you expect it to grow? You always want to think about tomorrow. Don’t put yourself in a bind by purchasing software that is to one- dimensional or will not fill your requirements as you grow. As you grow you may desire other options. You may want to integrate a payroll or access for certain sensitive areas at a later date. Don’t sell yourself short. Choose software that will grow with you and take care of all your future needs. The Camera- It cannot be emphasized enough how vital the photo is to your ID Badge. The whole idea behind an ID Badge is to identify. The better the picture, the better the identification. This does not mean however that you have to go out and buy the most expensive camera on the market. For the most part you will find great camera compatibility with most software applications. You may be able to pick up a few digital cameras from your local department store and that is all you will need to start. The Printer-Your printer will typically be determined by the type of card you use. You don’t have to over kill here either. Base it on the needs of your operations. What do you want to do with your cards? What do you want to prevent or secure? This will go a long way in helping you choose the right printer for you. Cards and Consumables- There are various types of cards on the market and the technology is growing. The card that is right for you will depend essentially on your application and the needs and requirements of your organization. Do you intend to integrate a payroll system that requires proximity or magnetic strips? What about visual ID with access control? If you are consider disposable adhesive overlays so that you can keep reusing the high tech cards by simply peeling off the overlay when a member departs your organization. There will also be replacement ribbons and cleaning kits to consider. Choose your products wisely. |
