Dye Sublimation By Catherine Williams of Safe-Card ID Dye sublimation is the process used by entry level ID card printer to print ID cards and badges. This printing method uses dye-based ribbon or cartridge in series of color panels. The print ribbon is also known as the YMCKO. The ribbon is named after the colors included on the panel, namely yellow, magenta, cyan and black. The black color is added as an overlay. The panels are repeating and are used in full for each card printed. As the ribbon and card passes below the printhead, thermal elements heat the dyes on the ribbon. As the hot dyes vaporize, it pass into the surface of the card. To vary the saturation of the color, the printhead vary the heat intensity of the thermal element in order to release the correct amount of color into the card. The heat variance allows one color to blend into the next color allowing an continuous color to appear. This printing method produces quality digital images which is best for ID badges.
