Additional Information about ID Card Printers
By Catherine Williams of Safecard ID
ID cards are familiar items found at the office, at entertainment venues and in many other facets of daily life. The majority of these cards are printed on an ID badge printer sitting on a desktop in the business headquarters. Custom printed cards can be provided to employees, members and guests. The Card is provided with an ID badge holder to allow for display for identification, access or other reasons. The majority of current ID card printers offer full color or monochrome print ribbons. Extra protection for the printed card is often provided by an overlay panel. This overcoat allows additional protection for the card and provides additional security for the printed text and custom information. Tests have proven that this overlay can be stripped and the text can be manipulated with the right chemicals. To assist in the elimination of tampering, larger corporations and government often require the use of a laminate on their printed PVC cards. By using the laminate overlay, tampering with the card surface will be noticeable. The removal or adjustment of the overlay will also damage the surface of the card. Increased durability and increased security are two of the reasons that organizations use laminations. Some overlaminates are holograms. Holograms provide the extra flair on the card that indicates it is a highly secure card. Custom hologram can be used by an organization to display a unique look using a company logo or text that indicates that the card is branded to them and that, since it was issued, it has not been tampered with. Professional card printer systems have capabilities to add holograms to the printed card at the time of issue. This option, available in professional model printers, can be purchased at the time the printer is obtained. Some of the most recent printers are able to be purchased without this module initially. It is marketed by indicating that the lamination capability can be added in the future and can be added in the field by the end user. Lamination capabilities vary with the manufacturer and model available, but many card printers have the option of a single side card lamination option or a dual sided lamination capability. These advanced model printers are more costly than a basic printer, but they provide extra security and are generally more durable. The majority of PVC card printer manufacturers have a secure line of badge printer models to choose from. Some of the manufacturers that provide the lamination option are below: The Evolis secure printer is called the Securion. This printer is s a dual sided card printer and contains additional security features needed by some organizations. The warranty for this card printer is 2 years or 100,000 card prints. Fargo is another manufacturer that provides a quality printer that can be upgraded with a lamination unit in the field. The HDP stands for high definition. This printing provides superior printing results by using the reverse transfer printing method. Fargo HDP printers have a two year warranty with a lifetime printhead warranty. The Magicard Tango+L offers both single and dual sided lamination. This printer comes with Ethernet, USB and parallel connectivity. A 3 year warranty is available with this printer.
